It depends on the structure of your compensation plan. I know, I know, you’re probably saying you are no help.

Let me explain.

I was taught this basic rule of thumb: width gives you money, depth gives you security. Sponsoring wide (or personally sponsoring representatives into your network marketing business) will provide you with fast money but you run the risk of them quitting your business as they lack depth (or roots) to keep them in the business. On the other hand, sponsoring deep is when you assist those you personally sponsor on your front line to sponsor others below them and thereby give them roots as well as provide you with the security that by building underneath them, your personally sponsored will stay with your business. By assisting to build your personally sponsored’s group below them, you are providing them with a reason to stay in your business by not wanting to give up the money that is being generated for them from their group below them.

Remember what I said above relative to the way to build your organization depends upon your compensation plan? Well, suppose your compensation plan paid you extremely well to recruit reps into your business and paid you low residuals on products or services purchased. In this case, definitely sponsor as wide as you can. Concentrate your efforts on personally sponsoring as many reps as you can. Usually this is a unilevel pay plan structure.

If however, your company’s pay plan was a binary or matrix program, then your only option is building (or driving) depth as anyone you sponsor spills over to a level below you once your top positions (2, 3, 4 or 5 depending upon your matrix system) are filled. Usually in these systems, being heavier in terms of residuals, you are forced to build depth.

There are even some network marketing companies that offer a blend of the two. I happen to be involved with one that offers unilevel bonuses and binary residuals. This definitely leads to network marketing schizophrenia as you have to think of building width and depth simultaneously.
